Low back pain specifically in the lumbar region is far too common, and far too painful. It is common with people as they age, but also with athletes, adults, and people with extra weight or poor incorrect posture.

The injections are typically made up of several mixtures including cortisone (a type of steroid), a local anesthetic (like lidocaine), and usually saline.

This combined mixture serves several purposes:

• First, the saline acts to clean or flush out the location where the injection takes place, usually the lumbar region of the lower back.
• Second, the anesthetic acts to immediately reduce pain while the other component has time to work. With the fast-acting pain relief, it allows for the inflammation to be reduced.
• Third, the steroid acts for a longer-term anti-inflammatory measure. The pressure and inflammation that builds up in the lower back are one of the core causes of the pain and discomfort.
