With the recent headlines claiming “long-term drug shortages” after a tornado hit Pfizer’s manufacturing plant in North Carolina, thousands of chronic pain sufferers hit the net looking for alternative modalities they had not previously been willing to explore. I, for one, was able to ditch my prescription drugs 8 years ago when my overall health began to suffer from years of pharmaceuticals. Don’t get me wrong … I’m not saying I didn’t need those painkillers, anti- inflammatories, and the array of drugs that accompanied them after my car was dragged under an 18-wheeler and my entire life was mangled to the core. I’m thankful for traditional medicines and the treatments/relief they provide. But after 9 years of heavy opioids and various other painkilling, nerve-numbing, brain altering meds I was feeling, looking and acting like someone at least twice my age and at 55 I really, really didn’t want to feel 110!
Let me introduce you to some of the pain management modalities that replaced my oral medications, nerve-blocking injections and ketamine/marcaine infusions.
Ozone Therapy
I was surprised to find that Ozone has been used by health practitioners in Europe for at least 100 years, but what really sold me on this therapy was (aside from the pain relief it provides) discovering that it is great for optimizing health, increasing immune cell production, and enhancing physical performance. I introduced this into my health regime and started to feel better almost immediately. Check out paindoctorny.com to find out more
Acupuncture
If you haven’t given acupuncture a try I say … go for it! It’s a relaxing experience and not only relieves pain but stimulates biochemical changes in your muscle tissue, spinal cord and brain. At first I was going for “my jab sessions” 3x a week, now I go every 6 weeks. Find a practitioner at acunyc.com
Apitherapy
Apitherapy is basically getting stung by bees. Also known as BVT (Bee Venom Therapy), apitherapists have been treating an array of conditions for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks & Egyptians used apitherapy for joint pain, inflammation, and other medical conditions. For loads of info go to healhive.com
Botox
While I was tempted to get Botox for my wrinkles and laugh lines, I continue to use it solely for the great pain relief it brings. Try painmanagementnyc.com or ask your doctor for a recommendation
Ginger
Adding at least 2 grams of ginger to my diet made a big difference. This natural anti-inflammatory is also great at increasing serotonin and dopamine levels which are essential for keeping you focused and combating depression which so often accompanies chronic pain and other health challenges. It’s also effective in treating dementia and PTSD. Get info & recipes at camillestyles.com
RFA and Viscosupplementation
Radiofrequency Ablation delivers radio waves in order to “disconnect” pain signals and provide relief from chronic pain. Viscosupplementation, hyaluronic acid injections are especially effective for osteoarthritis and other joint pain. Explore these and other pain treatments at mountsinai.org
Medical Maijuana
Medical marijuana can be ingested in a variety of ways and customized to your specific requirements. It is habit forming, NOT addictive; it is innocuous so it can be used in conjunction with other medications and has been proven effective for treating everything from seizures, cancerous tumors, migraine, chronic pain, glaucoma, PTSD, ALS and many other maladies. I like RISE Dispensary in Manhattan but there are many great options to choose from. risecannabis.com
I’m also a big fan of herbal medicines, massage, aromatherapy and daily exercise. A well balanced diet makes a huge difference too! You really are what you eat.
Hoping you can find relief … and of course ALWAYS ask your doctor before making any changes!
Wishing you a pain free future . . . .
